Shamans, Nostalgias, and the IMF: South Korean Popular Religion in Motion

Impressive depth and writing -- reads like a novel, but insightful on Shamanism
I've read Professor Laurel Kendall's three books on Shamanism, and all are written superbly and unveil a view of the world of Shaminism that is remarkably revelatory. Her prose is impeccable as is her ability to see into the psychology of her Korean informants. She is at once open to the Shamans' experience, yet completely respectful as she questions the stories she hears from her informants and the rituals and social interactions she experiences. This is true scholarship at work, written as though it were a novel: great details and beautiful prose. It is also a philosophical work written with a fine tuned ear to human foibles and tragedies Professor Kendall learns about from her informants. This is a great book to learn a lot about Korean shamanism. I am so happy I read it front to cover. The end notes are also highly interesting.
