The heavy spalting throughout makes this piece a stand alone. Swirling black lines, tinges of red hues bound to a weathered and aged sycamore are mesmerizing. If you desire a rare and not to be duplicated furnishing then you will not be disappointed in this one. The view you see is the stump upside down with the glass mounted on the root portion. Nearly the entire stump was beneath soil. It has been thoroughly kiln dried and heat treated. Spalting occurs when various colonizing fungi extend their growth throughout the specimen. The black lines illuminated in this piece are referred to as zone line spalting. Increasing numbers of woodworkers are selecting and endeavoring to culture spalting to enhance their masterpieces. Red hues in portions of this stump are not spalting but a response of the tree itself to injuries in the past. This one of a kind piece is believed to have been lightning struck as well. Despite blue appearance, glass is clear.
