4.5 Stars - Will Stand The Test Of Time When Used Properly
OVERALL RATING 4.5 StarsBought this to use overseas while traveling in a rental car. I've owned several carriers in the past, both material and hard shell. This one is one of the best material one's I've bought, and is infinitely preferable to a hard shell, which is a storage space hog.PROs**the material feels strong and pretty resistant to weather elements. It reminds me of the strips of vinyl grocery stories hang over access points into the stockroom. Not quite as thick buy heavy enough to do the job while being somewhat easy to use.** the material's weight convinces me water won't leak through, and the zipper and then the velcro fastener covering the zipper help prevent water entering at the point of baggage entry.** comes folded up in a decent, canvas carrying case, which allows you to store the carrier easily in the garage, vs. finding a place to store a hard shell carrier or just bundling up a non-carrying case rooftop carrier** comes with straps attached to the carrier and hook straps to use on the car doors, if you don't have a rooftop rack.** the overall size of the carrier is large enough for at least two or three of the largest sized suitcases on the market or easily two large and one or two carry-on bags. The images show six suitcases, but I don't think those are as large as mine, which is pretty much the largest you can find on the market. I think the ones shown in product description might be carry-on suitcases. The height of the carrier's interior when fully opened is a little higher than the height of my large hard-shell suitcase when lying flat on the surfaceCONS** Because the material is fairly strong, it's bulky so there will most likely be a little bit of a struggle getting it placed correctly, filling it or folding up when you're home. That's not really a Con, just something to consider**the canvas bag holder is great to have, but it's flimsy, can easily fall apart at the seams if you don't take your time to fold the carrier up correctly. That said, I do like that it comes with one, and if I take my time to fold the carrier up snugly, I can make the bag last for continued convenienceTHINGS TO CONSIDER** Straps attached to the carrier are convenient for tying the carrier down, but I do think a lot of continuous use/over use might eventually put enough strain at the point where the strap and material meet. It's natural for things to wear out over a few years.HOWEVER, there's a tendency for people to put added stress on straps attached to the carrier by tightening the straps too tight as a way to assure themselves the carrier is secure and their luggage won't fly off the roof (been there, done that). While it might give peace of mind, the constant stress is going to be like a pair of jean that after lengthy will rip apart at the seams.I learned a long time ago to remedy the situation using the carrier's attached straps to tie the carrier in place as a stabilizer tie down with a reasonably snug, yet not too tight, a pull, then use bungee cords to do the hard work in holding the carrier a carrier in place, while using straps attached to the carrier to hold it secure enough not to put stress on the bungee cords themselves. While I think the material of this carrier can take a great deal of stress and will have a long life span if one only uses the straps attached or provided with the carrier, I know a bungee cord accessory will increase the life of the carrier even more.

Nice cargo bag, & Completely Waterproof... Buuuut
Purchased this Maelstrom Rooftop Cargo Bag for a trip in Oct 2023.The PVC material is thick & a bit stiff to work with. It's also a little heavy due it's quality material. It well made with sealed seams & heavy zippers with an overlap to cover the zippers after it's loaded. It was not overloaded at any time or had any known strain on the seams or zippers. It was loaded before leaving, unloaded upon arrival. Reloaded for return trip. Then unloaded a few days after returning home, because we were having a down pouring of rain! Couldn't have rained any harder! So all in all the bag was loaded & unloaded twice, without any rough handling. The zippers & opening doesn't go around the front of the bag. So, there's about an 18+" pocket at the front of the bag.Due to this design the top will not fully open & fold back the complete length of the bag. You need to push things into that "pocket" to make use of this space. I'm sure it was designed like this to prevent any water leakage into the bag as your driving down the road in wet weather. I stuffed sleeping bags, blankets & pillows there, because it was the easiest to fill this "pocket" area with, without putting stress on the zipper ends & the welded seam between the bag top & bottom at the zipper ends. You can see in the picture, at the lower left of the white portion is the end of the welded seam between the top & bottom of the bag. The welding of the seam has separated about 1½-2", I'm hoping it won't pull apart any further.... Other than this the bag has been great, & COMPLETELY WATERPROOF! The car was driven at highway speeds in a torrential down pour a little over 2 hrs. Then left fully loaded for a few days at home due to hard rain. (I didn't want to open to bag & have it fill with water while unpacking in the rain.)When the rain stopped, I wiped the remaining water off the bag before unzipping to unload.... EVERYTHING INSIDE was COMPLETELY DRY! The flap over the zipper is plenty enough to keep water out! I was impressed!I believe the seam separation at the end of the zipper is a minor problem & can be lived with over it's duration. It obviously didn't leak, so I will keep the bag, keep a close eye on that seam separation. I think there's enough good products on the market to seal seams with. If it becomes a problem, I will seal it with something & go on with life.Overall, I believe this bag is well made, & has proven to be Completely Waterproof!Do I think the manufacturer can make improvements? Some.... Like maybe a small amount of stitching at the end of welded seams to reinforce these areas of possible stress & prevent them from pulling apart. Then that stitching can be sealed, to prevent leakage. It'd be an easy fix. (I know it used to work in a sewing factory. At the ends of your zippers on coats, pants & sometimes pockets on jeans, you'll notice what they call tacking. Those tacks are used at stress points to keep seams from coming apart.)Would I buy another Maelstrom Cargo Bag? YES! It's a quality product....Would I recommend it to others? YES!

Got us to Disney World and back from Houston!
Very durable, Easy to use once you get the hang of it. Extremely waterproof and very stable on the top of our Nissan Murano. We were able to fit two adults, two teenagers and a one toddler’s clothes, shoes, and toiletries inside for a three week Universal Studios and DISNEY World trip.

Noisy when used without rack, but good product.
I was very satisfied. It was a last minute purchase because I needed extra space. It was placed on the roof of my truck (motorcycle took all the space in the truck bed) and it was attached without a roof rack. It’s roomy and stayed secured during a 7 hour drive from Northern California to Southern California. The only issue is that if you use it without a rack it will produce a lot of wind noise. I see myself using it in the bed of the truck to secure camping gear to keep everything dry instead of using a tarp and a bunch of tie downs. I think if you have a rack to attach it to a vehicle, it will easily be a 5 star product.

Absolute Necessity for Travel!
I never write reviews, but I felt compelled to do so for this product. Ordered this before a 7 hour road trip for the top of my Durango. It was slightly difficult to install, but a few YouTube videoes later, we got it. About 20 minutes into our trip, we hit our first torrential downpour. We were stuck in stand-still traffic for an hour and a half, with the rain pouring and the wind whipping. After we got moving again, we drove through a literal tornado. Wind gusts of 80+ MPH and absolutely torrential rains. I just knew when we got there, everything would be drenched. Much to our surprise, everything was 100% dry when we arrived at our destination. I'm still in shock, honestly. For the price, I didn't have high expectations, but holy cow - this carrier went above and beyond. Would absolutely 100% recommend!
