Thief Stumped. Could not Get past this Lock
My new shed has a set of double doors, not the ideal for this type of lock. However, I installed the 'door' part of the assembly on the semi-fixed shed door (essentially the jamb) and the striker on the open-able door. Works just as expected and the locking of the two together prevents forced spreading which would open a more conventional striker-type of latchset. Nice.Follow-up - June 10, 2024 - - - Guess what? A thief attempted to get into my shed through this Segal lock. He pried the tumbler ring away from the door but could not break it free from its internal mechanism. He also tried to use a flexible tool to push back a spring-loaded striker. In short, the lock prevented this Neanderthal mutton-head from getting in and lifting a bunch of costly stuff from my small barn. So Amazon just delivered my second Segal SE 15361 lockset. Give it five more stars. I will install it immediately. Thank you, Segal, for this very effective lock and thank you, Amazon, for making it available to us homeowners. Have several other security features on the way as well. But the SE 15361 proved to be an excellent front line of defense.

Gook lock; missing a critical part, sent promptly
When I opened the package, I discovered that the backplate was missing. Screws go through the backplate to hold the cylinder in position; without the backplate, the cylinder falls out.I have a metalworking shop in the basement, so I was able to make a substitute backplate. It's not as good as the real thing though. I' wrote Segal asking them to send a replacement. I heard from them a few hours later, saying that they've shipped me a replacement backplate. The directions specify a 1-3/8" hole saw to cut the hole for the cylinder. The cylinder is 1.175" in diameter. A 1-3/16" hole saw (1.1875") seemed to me to be a much better choice. I wrote and asked them about it. They replied that 1-3/8" is correct; the trim ring takes up the space and holds the cylinder in position. I'm guessing that the additional clearance allows for misplacement of holes and it will still work. One plus side, it seems to be a sturdy and well-made lock. Against that one has to balance a missing piece, promptly replaced.

Segal surface-mount, key cylinder dead-bolt lock a good value.
Seems that these add-on dead-bolts types are not as widely sold as in past years (not clear why) as they aren't found as readily at some home-improvement/hardware stores or even some locksmith shops. Bought this lock to supplement an existing door lock that came my Mom's then new apt a couple of years ago. The Segal lock was installed by the building supervisor into the door location where a similar type lock had been removed (by previous tenant?). He had to modify lock/strike slightly for fit.Selected the Segal lock for the following reasons:- Name-brand traditional surface-mounted, key cylinder, deadbolt type. Segal reportedly invented this lock type for NYC apts, and "Segal lock" has been used sometimes generically for other brands' similar products.- Moderately priced, available from Amazon with free shipping for the price. Can't imagine that locks much cheaper costing much less can adequate quality.- Includes 2 types of strikes for more mounting flexibility for a particular door/frame construction.- When searching for a lock at the time, read somewhere (can not recall where) that the Segal locks hole patterns were more standard than for some other brands (e.g. Yale), so may be better able to use existing screw holes from previous such locks. From some other reviewers, should note that one can still may have issues with replacing a similar older Segal or other lock, may have to work to make lock fit correctly to an existing lock location. Now more than 2 years after installation, the Segal lock is still performing OK without any known issues.

Good quality, nice and heavy-duty.
Good quality, nice and heavy-duty. I realize these are not bump-proof, but for my application on a 111 year-old front door it's a vast improvement over the older surface-mounted lock that it replaced. This did include matching extra-long security screws to attach the strike plate (3" long I believe? Long enough to securely attach to the studs through a thick old plaster wall), I noticed this lock got a fairly negative review on a popular consumer-rating magazine's recent report without using the long screws and a better rating using them, they docked some points because they said the long screws were not included, but it appears that they do now include them. In my case, I have no doubt that the lock and latch are now the strongest part of the door- if someone wants to break in they will now either just break the glass or completely destroy the door jamb, but I don't think they will easily break the lock and latch. Good quality materials, seems much better made than the similar-looking locks that are about 1/3 the price. Wish they had it available in an antique brass or bronze color, but since it's made of bronze it can be darkened up a bit using Birchwood Caseys' brass-black.

Some door frames are tricky
This is a very well made product with good installation directions. Some door frames are more challenging than others when it comes to mounting the strike plate. I like that two different strike plates are included - unless you have a lot of experience you will not know which one you need in advance. Worked well for me. Not for installation next to a window in a door - use on glass free doors only so intruder can't break window and turn knob to open. For solid doors - this is just the ticket. Keys and cylinder are smooth and well machined - no rough edges. Would buy again.
